NCAMN – Hiking Staircase Trail – POSTPONED To 2/12/2018
February 10 @ 9:00 am - 3:00 pm
Hiking Staircase Trail February 10, 2018 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. (if you missed the December 2017 hike come join or if you would like to hike again, please come join).
The view above the river will be a spectacular New Year experience. Bring lunch and beverage. We will repeat our climb up Turkey Mountain (aka Stair Bluffs), high above the White River across from Buffalo City, and eat lunch with the soaring raptors by the landmark cross on top of the bluff, best view in Baxter County. You can look down at the river 680’ below.
Challenging length and elevation, 6 miles with three climbs. Hike starts with moderate 200’ ascent of a ridge, a brisk morning warmup, then descend and follow Cook Creek to the foot of Turkey Mountain. The 600’ ascent up Turkey Mountain is steep, but doable if you take your time, and the climb is worth it. We rest and eat, then descend back to Cook Hollow and retrace our steps up the creek. We crest the 200’ ridge one more returning to the vehicles.
Directions. Trailhead parking located 14 miles south of cotter (30 minutes). Take US 62/412, half way between Cotter and Flippin turn south on highway 101, cross Crooked Creek, turn left at the Rea Valley crossroad, continue on 101 until it turns into gravel at Hand Valley. The White River valley lies to your left. The road is now CR 662, gravel, follow it uphill, the trailhead is behind the trees on your left.
